After a 1 week hiatus, THE EDGE returns with a battle between the Broncos(4-1) and the Jacksonville Jaguars(2-3).  These teams met in Denver in Week 3 of last season, with the Jags "man-handling" the Broncos, winning 23-14.   This year's Jags team isn't nearly as physical and is missing some key components, especially on the offensive line.  Can the Broncos take advantage and keep up with their winning ways?

It's Broncos/Jags. Who has "The Edge"?

Who has "The EDGE"? Broncos WR Brandon Marshall or Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis?

What a difference a few weeks makes!  Teams that looked tough going into the season have suffered injuries (Brady in NE) or declined (SD and INDY) while other teams have shot ahead (TENN and DEN).  If you had asked me before the season what my thoughts were on JAX, I would have told you that the only thing holding them back was INDY.  But their offensive line was decimated by injuries, and the team has never bounced back.

As for Denver, I expected them to sweep KC this year, but to win two of four games against SD and OAK.  I also thought that either TB or NO could sneek up on DEN.  But KC managed to beat Denver, while Denver beat the other four teams.  Denver's offense is playing at a SuperBowl level, and while the defense has looked weak, it showed a lot of talent in week five.

Let's take a look at the Denver / Jacksonville match-up this week, and discuss some if the issues surrounding the game.

Denver Broncos @ Oakland Raiders - Making The Grade

One last look at the Raiders game before moving full throttle to Week 2's Home Opener against the Chargers. We'll talk much more about that, but another new feature here at MHR is "Making The Grade" where I will grade the Broncos performance from the night before. I will also provide the numbers for the team leader in that particular category.  While it should be a lot of fun to look back, I will turn a critical eye on the Broncos performance, because the Broncos are going to have to beat teams that are alot better than the Oakland Raiders if they are really going to take that next step.

QUARTERBACK

A

vs OAK / 9.8.08PassingRushing
CompAttPctYdsTDRushYdsAvgTD
Jay Cutler 16 24 66.7 299 2 5 9 1.8 0

Prior to the game I talked about Cutlers struggles against the Raiders in 2007.  He has just 1 TD pass compared to 4 INTs and the Raiders' pressure seemed to get under Cutler's skin.  Not this time.  Cutler looked poised and confident.  He also knew exactly where to go with the football and has a complete grasp of the offensive game plan.  His number could have been even better(hard to believe) if Tony Scheffler hadn't dropped a sure TD, or if Cutler's mechanics hadn't let him down.  His consistency level, especially drive to drive, was alot better than in 2007.  Cutler was much more of a streaky QB last year, last night he was a consistent quarterback.  Regardless of the reason, Jay played great, and great quarterbacks can elevate mediocre talent.  A solid A for Cutler.

Poll
Your Turn! Grade The Performance of the Broncos in their 41-14 win over Oakland

* - Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan improves to 12-4 in season openers in his career, second-best all-time among coaches who began their careers in the Super Bowl era (min. 14 games).

A ROYAL INTRODUCTION

* - Broncos rookie WR Eddie Royal finished with the most receiving yards (146) and the fourth-most receptions (9) of any NFL player in Week 1. Royal added two rushes for 9 yards, two punt returns for 19 yards and a kickoff return for 11 yards, bringing his all-purpose yards total to 185.

* - Royal’s 146 receiving yards marked the sixth most by a player in his NFL debut in league history with those records dating back to 1960. His 146 receiving yards also were the second most by a Broncos rookie in his first game with that record held by WR Rick Upchurch (153 on three receptions with 1 TD) vs. K.C. (9/21/75).

* - Royal’s nine receptions were the most by a Broncos rookie in his NFL debut.

How important is this game to the Broncos?  After all, this isn't a game against the Chargers for the title of AFC West best.  However, it is an important game in many, many ways.

  1. The winner is undefeated, the loser has to win two games in a row for a winning season.
  2. The game is a divisional pairing; crucial for playoff tie breaks.
  3. This is Monday Night Football; the big stage.  The confidence boost (or lag) could be a major factor going into the early season.

For Denver fans, it doesn't get any better than this.  Denver playing in the opening MNF game against the hated Raiders.  Let's break down the Xs and Os, and take a look at how these teams match up.
