Jacksonville Jaguars @ Denver Broncos - A Primer

The Denver Broncos (4-1), who hold a two-game lead atop the AFC West, aim for their 400th overall victory on Sunday when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3). Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:05p.m. MDT, and the game will be broadcast on CBS with Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf calling the action.

Denver is coming off a 16-13 win at home against Tampa Bay last week. The Broncos posted three sacks against a Buccaneers squad that had not allowed a sack in its last two games while Denver kicker Matt Prater made all three field goal attempts, including a 55- yarder that marked his fourth 50+yard conversion this year.

The Broncos face a Jaguars team that lost 26-21 against Pittsburgh on Sunday night. All five of Jacksonville's games this season have been decided by seven points or fewer, and its defeat to the Steelers snapped the club's two-game winning streak.

Having won their last six home games in the regular season, the Broncos enter Sunday's game with the NFL's longest home winning streak. Quarterback Jay Cutler has sparked Denver's recent home success, throwing 15 touchdown passes and two interceptions in addition to completing 70 percent of his passes in that six-game period.

Named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, Cutler has directed a Broncos offense that ranks second in the NFL in both yards per game (415.0) and first downs (117) while placing third in the league in points per game (29.8). Brandon Marshall has been a key part of Denver's offensive success, leading all NFL wide receivers in receptions (34) and posting the second-best receiving yards per game average (105.8) in the league.

Denver's defense has helped the club build early leads with the Broncos one of just five teams in the NFL to not allow a touchdown in the first quarter.

MHR Chalk Talk -- Week 5 - Tampa Bay at Denver

YOUR SOURCE FOR THE VERY BEST

IN DENVER BRONCO PRE-GAME ANALYSIS

MILEHIGHREPORT.COM

bucsATbroncos

This is going to be one heck of a ride.  We've gotten past some good teams (SD and NO), beaten down the Raiders, and got shocked by the Chiefs.  Going into this TB game, I have some things I'm confident about, and frankly, some things I'm concerned about.  TB is a 3-1 team just like we are, but with a glaring difference.  They have some balance.

TB is perhaps a top ten team right now in my opinion, and this game could be a solid measuring stick for just how good we are.  We only lead SD by one game in our playoff race, so it's a very significant game.

Can our young guys bounce back from a loss like pros?  Can our secondary attack an INT prone Griese?  What can we exploit, and what should we avoid?

You've come to the right place.  MHR has you covered.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Denver Broncos - A Primer

The Denver Broncos, who lead the AFC West with a 3-1 record at the quarter point of the season, host Tampa Bay (3-1) on Sunday in the Buccaneers' first visit to Denver in 12 years. Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:05 p.m. MDT, and the game will be broadcast on FOX (KDVR-TV 13).

Denver, which started the season 3-0 for the first time in five years, suffered a 33-19 loss at Kansas City last week. Despite four giveaways and only scoring one touchdown in four red zone possessions, the Broncos trailed by just seven points with two minutes remaining before the Chiefs pulled away.

The Broncos face a Buccaneers team that extended its winning streak to three games following a 30-21 home victory against the Packers last week. The Buccaneers, who had a 36:50-to-23:10 time-of-possession advantage against Green Bay, scored the game's final 10 points to erase a 21-20 fourth-quarter deficit.

Tampa Bay, making its first visit to Denver since 1996, is the only team in the NFL that has never played a game at INVESCO Field at Mile High (opened in 2001). The two clubs last met in 2004 with the Broncos earning a 16-13 win at Tampa Bay.

Despite their loss last week, the Broncos have led for 68.7 percent (164:53-of-240:00) of the time this season. They have posted leads of at least 18 points in three of their four games and own the NFL's best first-half scoring differential (+33 / 82-49).

The Broncos' offense has accounted for league highs in points (126) and first downs (100) while averaging an NFL-best 435.5 yards per game. The club's offensive line has surrendered only two sacks in 160 pass plays, marking a 1.3 sack percentage that is the best in the league.

Quarterback Jay Cutler ranks second in the league in passing yards (1,275) and has accounted for two of the top three single-game passing yardage marks in the AFC this year. His top two targets, wide receivers Brandon Marshall (31 rec.) and Eddie Royal (27 rec.), form the most productive pass-catching duo (58 rec.) in the NFL.

The Broncos will celebrate their annual alumni weekend as well as the 10-year anniversary of their Super Bowl XXXIII team around Sunday's game. Approximately 150 former players are scheduled to take part in the festivities, which include the presentation of Gary Zimmerman's Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2008 ring.

The Denver Broncos Defense - The Truth About The Kansas City Loss

It seems like every week the same people say the same thing about the Broncos defense.  We hear how horrible they are, how they can't stop the run, how they can't defend the pass, how they can't put pressure on the quarterback.  Some of that is true, we all know that, but something has become a disturbing trend, something that continues to be overlooked.  Much of the problems with the defense start with the offense and special teams.  No, really, it does.

Specifically against Kansas City, I'd go so far as to say the defense, for over 3 quarters, played as well as it did against the Raiders Week 1.  Unfortunately, the offense didn't give them much of a chance. What is certain is the Broncos defense is by no means a dominant defense in any facet, run defense, pass defense, pressuring the quarterback, none of it.  The defense as a group is average at best, but with the offense the Broncos put on the field this team should be able to win, unless the offense, the strength of the team, let's it down.  On Sunday, that is exactly what happened.

Take a look at the drive chart for the Chiefs on Sunday --

Kansas City Chiefs 33 - Denver Broncos 19 - Making The Grade

The Broncos fell flat, there is no other way to describe it.  Before closing the book on Week 4 and looking forward, with nervous anticipation, to a visit by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, let's take one last look at the (lack of)performance by the Broncos in yesterday's loss to the Chiefs, in something I like to call, "Making The Grade"  As always, the most important "grade" is the one on the scoreboard, and for that, the Broncos earned a big, fat F.  What about the players performance?  Let's take a look....

QUARTERBACK

C-

Jay Cutler -- 29/49 - 361 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT

Cutler piled up the numbers, but the Broncos offense, or it's young leader, never seemed to get comfortable in the "friendly" confines of Arriwhead Stadium.  Cutler seemed to relegate to some of his bad habits as the game went on, losing his mechanics several times that led to poor throws.  He also seemed to lock on to receivers early which allowed Chiefs linebackers and defensive backs to get in position to make plays.  In two specific instances, Cutler locked on to Brandon Marshall almost immediately after the snap and in both occasions had passes intercepted.  Cutler also seemed to lose his composure a bit at the end of the game, a sign that the Chiefs defense, as well as his uneven play, had begun to frustrate him.  All quarterbacks are going to have forgettable days.  What separates the 'very good' from the 'great' is the ability to learn and grow from it as a football player.  That is Cutler's next challenge as he works towards Sunday's game with Tampa.
