MHR Chalk Talk -- Week 1 - Denver Broncos at Oakland Raiders
YOUR SOURCE FOR THE VERY BEST
IN DENVER BRONCO PRE-GAME ANALYSIS
FROM MILEHIGHREPORT.COM
How important is this game to the Broncos? After all, this isn't a game against the Chargers for the title of AFC West best. However, it is an important game in many, many ways.
-
The winner is undefeated, the loser has to win two games in a row for a winning season.
-
The game is a divisional pairing; crucial for playoff tie breaks.
-
This is Monday Night Football; the big stage. The confidence boost (or lag) could be a major factor going into the early season.
For Denver fans, it doesn't get any better than this. Denver playing in the opening MNF game against the hated Raiders. Let's break down the Xs and Os, and take a look at how these teams match up.

Denver Broncos 28 - Arizona Cardinals 14 - Five Point Stance Post Game Edition
Finally! The pre-season is over and it couldn't have ended fast enough. Only the unenviable task of trying to cut the Broncos roster from 74 to 53 remains between now and the Broncos doing it for real with the Raiders on September 8. That cuts have to be announced before 4PM est tomorrow afternoon, and we'll have you covered all day long with breaking news, thought and comment. Until then, let's take a look back at what turned out to be a fairly entertaining football game despite the void of talent.
1. I Really Like Darrell Hackney....A lot -- Can someone give me a good reason why #4 shouldn't be the #2 quarterback on this football team? Hackney was given the opportunity to play all 4 quarters against the Cardinals, who at times played their 1st string offense, and his numbers were fairly impressive - 17/26, 208 yards, 1TD. He also ran the ball 8 times for 35 yards.
His lack of height has been discussed at nauseum, but he's a winner. He always seems to make a play when it needs to be made. Take the long TD pass to Colbert as an example. Hackney should have been sacked. The Cardinals did a great job snuffing out the bootleg. What does Hackney do? Stop on a dime, change course, and have enough presence of mind, with a LB bearing down on him, to deliver a strike to Keary Colbert in stride. 87 yards later, the Broncos had taken the lead. Those of the types of plays winners make.
Let's face reality. If Jay Cutler would, well, I won't say it. But if it were to happen, the Broncos would be screwed. Most teams would be. Cutty is the franchise. If that is the reality, then why not have a guy backing him up that can make some plays, a guy that can improvise, a guy that doesn't make the stupid decision. I have seen enough of both guys to say with confidence that I would rather see Darrell Hackney as the backup QB of the Denver Broncos.

Green Bay Packers @ Denver Broncos - Five Point Stance

To Follow The Week From The Packers Perspective, Check Out AcmePackingCompany!
There just can't be enough corny catch-phrases on one site, so here's another one. Five Point Stance will be my list of 5 things I'll be focused on each game. Plus, it sounds better than "5 Things I'll Be Focused On Against The Packers".
This new feature gets welcomed to the site as the Packers come to town for Pre-Season Game #3. We all know the starters will play most of the first 45 minutes so this is going to be our best chance yet to see where the Broncos stack up on both sides of the ball. Here's my 5 Point Stance for tonight's game --

Dallas Cowboys @ Denver Broncos - What To Watch For
Dallas Cowboys @ Denver Broncos
August 16th, 2008 - 7:00pm MST
Invesco Field @ Mile High
Denver, CO
To Follow The Week From The Cowboy's Perpective, Check Out Blogging The Boys!
The Broncos open the home portion of their pre-season schedule tonight against the Dallas Cowboys still looking to answer many of the questions we have been asking all reloading season. Last week, many of my target areas were general as I focused on the play of the O-Line as a group, or the defensive line as a group. As the pre-season continues, my focus grows more and more specific, tageting players. That will start tonight. Like last week, I have also included what the other contributors on MHR are looking for tonight as well.
1. The Two Ryan's(Harris and Clady) -- I will be watching closely to how Clady progresses from last week to this week. Nothing like being thrown right into the fire, with Clady going up against Mario Williams last week and Demarcus Ware this week. If Clady can hold his own tonight, not only in pass protection, but in avoiding penalties and silly mistakes, I will feel good about where he is at this early in his rookie year. I am also looking for Clady to become more of a physical presence in the running game. Early on last week, the Broncos O-Line struggled in the run game, leaving Selvin Young gasping for breath in the backfield.
Much of the same goes for Harris, who struggled early but seemed to settle down as the game wore on. We need to remember that Harris was a Left Tackle in college, and learning to play from the oppisite side is kind of like learning to write with your left hand if you are a right-handed person. I am looking for Harris to also become more physical in the run game. If Harris struggles again, it could open the door for Montrae Holland to re-emerge. While Hollad's weight will always be an issue, there is little doubting his physicality.

Houston Texans 19 - Denver Broncos 16 -- Thoughts and Analysis
Denver Broncos 16 @ Houston Texans 19
August 9th, 2008 - 6:00pm MST
Reliant Stadium - Houston, TX
Game 1 of the pre-season is behind us and while the end result was a loss there were some encouraging signs. There were also some things that concern me a bit. Yes, it was only the first pre-season game. Yes, in reality, they don't mean anything. That doesn't mean, however, that we can't look at the game and find some positives and negatives to carry forward. There are also some distrubing trends that continue to manifest themselves on this team that need to get worked out over the next 3 weeks.
Using the games stats as a baseline, lets breakdown the game -
QUARTERBACK PLAY
First off, Jay Cutler is back and better than ever. After the expected early jitters by the offense as a whole on their first drive, the Broncos first string offense dissected the Texans defense on a beautifully executed TD drive. Cutler was 7-9 on the drive, and finished it off by running 15 yards for the touchdown. Cutler 1 - Diabetes 0. Sure, it was only one game, but the Broncos are also practicing right now alot more than they will during the season. That leads me to think that Cutler is in for a HUGE season.
The same can't be said for Patrick Ramsey who was simply awful, and trend that has continued the entire Camp so far. Both interceptions were ugly, and Ramsey's 2.9 yards per pass are an embarrassment. Ramsey's feet are all over the place in the pocket and his poor mechanics lead to a horribly inaccurate delivery. Let's face it, the Broncos would be in trouble no matter what if Cutler went down for a significant amount of time, most teams would be, but if I have to into battle with a backup QB I at least want it to be a guy who will give me the best chance. Anyone out there NOT THINK the best chance to win is Darrell Hackney??
Hackney played well in his time, was able to move around in the pocket and moved the team very well. Could he do it against 1st Team defenses? Good question, but he looks a lot more comfortable in the pocket than Ramsey and seems to have a better handle on the offense, even if it is pared down quite a bit.

Denver Broncos Team Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
Rod Smith makes an appearance, Ebenezar Ekuban is getting frustrated and #20 was barely off the back of Travis Henry before another player laid claim. All that and more in today's Team Camp update!
No one knows exactly what the future is for Rod Smith but one thing's for sure, it will involve helping the Denver Broncos in some way, shape or form. Smith showed up on the practice field yesterday to help out with the receivers and expressed his love for the Orange and Blue -
I love the Denver Broncos, I love the organization, so there ain’t nothing that I wouldn’t do to help. Whether it is on the field or off the field, anything I can do, even just sitting there and talking to some of the guys who are playing receiver now, just giving them little tips and stuff like that. I enjoy that because I know it is going to help them, therefore it helps the organization. There isn’t anything that I wouldn’t do to get us back to where I feel we belong.
Smith already has the attention of one of the Broncos' newcomers, WR Keary Colbert -
Anytime you have a player with the experience like him and the career he has had, you want to listen and take good notes and try to implement them into your game.He has had a career that has been remarkable. I’m really trying to put in a career and a season like he has done in the past. That’s the start of it really, getting to know how to do it through him. He has the blueprint, and I just have to follow it.
It is impressive that Smith is open to helping the younger guys, and even better that one of those guys is open to listen. Colbert can learn alot from a guy like Smith, and it seems he is willing to be taught.
So what advice has Smith given to Colbert?
Just trusting my speed, trusting the technique in certain routes. I have to come out here the next couple of days and practice it, perfect it.I’m ready to get it going.

The Quest: Offensive Comparison '07 vs '08
This post is an historic one for me as it is my 100th since joining Mile High Report almost a year ago. I am currently working on several different upcoming posts and I was wondering if I should make a certain one my historic post, but then I thought I should just stick to what my original schedule was. This was planned to be my next post, therefore, it will have to be my 100th post.
I recently posted my positional comparison for the defense along with grading the performance of the 2007 group and also applying a preliminary grade for what I see as potential upgrades or downgrades for each position. I felt incomplete not having done the offense as well, so here it is.
The 2007 offensive group had a solid core surround by a couple of glaring deficiencies. The story of our season was told best by a series of posts called “NPTB” or No Points Left Behind that can be found all over the MHR Community during last season. Our offense racked up the yardage without scoring very many points.
The Quest for the offense this season is about one thing, getting into the end zone!

Just how good are the new guys?
We have an underlying discussion going on at MHR that hasn't yet had a devoted story. When some names get brought up, we either rally to the player's defense or express some concern. Let's devote a post to the dicussion and have it out.
There are 5 positions on the team that (likely) have potential new starters, and six players. SAF may feature a new name (McCree or Manuel), but I would call the odds of this happening "even" to "less than likely".
As a part of The Quest, let's take a moment to focus on our newest players that have better than even chances of starting. The longer serving players may have a better formulation of what The Quest is, but it is the internalization by the new players that may take up to 5 spots on the roster that may make a substantial impact.
The positions, and the players I'm talking about, are:
