MHR Chalk Talk -- Week 5 - Tampa Bay at Denver
YOUR SOURCE FOR THE VERY BEST
IN DENVER BRONCO PRE-GAME ANALYSIS
MILEHIGHREPORT.COM
This is going to be one heck of a ride. We've gotten past some good teams (SD and NO), beaten down the Raiders, and got shocked by the Chiefs. Going into this TB game, I have some things I'm confident about, and frankly, some things I'm concerned about. TB is a 3-1 team just like we are, but with a glaring difference. They have some balance.
TB is perhaps a top ten team right now in my opinion, and this game could be a solid measuring stick for just how good we are. We only lead SD by one game in our playoff race, so it's a very significant game.
Can our young guys bounce back from a loss like pros? Can our secondary attack an INT prone Griese? What can we exploit, and what should we avoid?
You've come to the right place. MHR has you covered.

The State of the Denver Broncos
It's time to take an honest self evaluation. There are a lot of good things to take comfort in if you are a Broncos fan. There are also some things that need to be faced that should keep you awake at night. I want to look at both.
Coming from a coach's perspective, folks shouldn't panic over one game. On the other hand, folks shouldn't get too excited over the 3-0 mark we were at before the KC loss. What we have on our hands is a very, very good team that has some terrible flaws. Yes, we beat SD and NO, but the games were close enough to be decided by a two point conversion and missed FGs. We beat Oakland, but that's not much to brag about. We also lost to KC, and that's a concern.
We'll look at what can be adjusted for and what probably can't, and where this puts the team as it continues The Quest.

Kansas City Chiefs 33 - Denver Broncos 19 - Making The Grade
The Broncos fell flat, there is no other way to describe it. Before closing the book on Week 4 and looking forward, with nervous anticipation, to a visit by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, let's take one last look at the (lack of)performance by the Broncos in yesterday's loss to the Chiefs, in something I like to call, "Making The Grade" As always, the most important "grade" is the one on the scoreboard, and for that, the Broncos earned a big, fat F. What about the players performance? Let's take a look....
| QUARTERBACK | |
C- |
Jay Cutler -- 29/49 - 361 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT Cutler piled up the numbers, but the Broncos offense, or it's young leader, never seemed to get comfortable in the "friendly" confines of Arriwhead Stadium. Cutler seemed to relegate to some of his bad habits as the game went on, losing his mechanics several times that led to poor throws. He also seemed to lock on to receivers early which allowed Chiefs linebackers and defensive backs to get in position to make plays. In two specific instances, Cutler locked on to Brandon Marshall almost immediately after the snap and in both occasions had passes intercepted. Cutler also seemed to lose his composure a bit at the end of the game, a sign that the Chiefs defense, as well as his uneven play, had begun to frustrate him. All quarterbacks are going to have forgettable days. What separates the 'very good' from the 'great' is the ability to learn and grow from it as a football player. That is Cutler's next challenge as he works towards Sunday's game with Tampa. |

Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs - A Primer
For all your Kansas City Chiefs News, check out Arrowhead Pride
One of five 3-0 teams in the NFL, the Denver Broncos will put their undefeated record on the line this week when they face the Kansas City Chiefs (0-3) on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CDT, and the game will be broadcast on CBS by Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf.
Denver improved to 3-0 for the first time in five seasons after its 34-32 home win against New Orleans last week. The Broncos took a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter and held on for the win after making several key fourth-quarter defensive stops, including a deflected pass on a potential game-tying two-point conversion attempt and a third-and-1 with the Saints driving for a go-ahead score.
The Broncos face a Chiefs team that lost 38-14 to the Falcons on the road last week. Kansas City has started three different quarterbacks in each of its first three games, becoming the fourth team since the 1970 NFL merger (non-strike seasons only) with that distinction.
Last year, the Broncos swept their two-game season series against the Chiefs with wins of 27-11 (Nov. 11) and 41-7 (Dec. 9). Denver enters Sunday's game looking for its first three-game regular-season winning streak against the Chiefs since 1991-92 and can win consecutive regular-season games at Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since 1976-79 (4 gms.).
Through their first three games of the season, the Broncos have held the lead 88.2 percent of the time (158:43-of-180:00) and have not trailed for 97.8 percent of the time (176:02-of-180:00). Fast starts have been key to Denver's 3-0 record with its +36 (72-36) first-half point differential leading the NFL.
Offensively, the Broncos lead the league in scoring (38.0 ppg.) and touchdowns (14) while ranking second in the NFL in yardage (432.0 ypg.). Denver's 114 points through three games are a club record and equal the mark posted in that period by New England last season when the Patriots set an NFL-record with 589 points for the year.
Quarterback Jay Cutler is second in the league in passing yards (914) while Brandon Marshall leads all NFL wide receivers with 24 catches and can set a club record with his fourth consecutive 100-yard receiving game this week. Denver Head Coach Mike Shanahan enters Sunday's game with an opportunity to earn his 150th career victory - His overall career record stands at 149-95 (.611).

Denver Broncos 34 - New Orleans Saints 32 - Making the Grade
Another nail-biter for the Broncos came down to the final seconds, and again the Broncos survived. Let's take one last look at the 34-32 win over the Saints before getting right back to the AFC West and the Kansas City Chiefs. We'll talk much more about that, but it is time for this week's edition of "Making The Grade" where I will grade the Broncos performance from the day before. The most important "grade" is the one on the scoreboard, and for the Broncos this week it was another W. What about the players performance? Let's take a look....

Jay Cutler -- 21/34 - 264 yds, 2 TD, 1 INT To be so young and so talented. Jay Cutler had another solid football game, yet the Broncos signal caller still left me a bit wanting. Perhaps because Cutler is so good so young I expect too much. I'll except that reasoning and give you that I am the one with the problem. Still, call me spoiled in what I am looking for from Cutler. As was stated in the open threads yesterday, Cutler has the weight of the football team on his shoulder right now, which magnified every mistake he makes. Yesterday it was the interception on the first play after the Saints had scored a touchdown to cut the Broncos lead to 21-10. That is a big drive for the Broncos at that point because the defense had just spent a long time on the field and needed the break. It was a bad decision to throw into double coverage, but I won't blame Cutler for having confidence in both his arm and his receivers. There were also a couple of throws Cutler flat out missed, leaving yards and points on the field. I know, I'm being overly critical, but Cutler plays quarterback in Denver, it comes with the territory. The offense is still scoring at an impressive clip. They scored points on 5/10 possessions yesterday, including 3/5 for Touchdowns. For the season, the Broncos have scored on 18/29 possessions(62%), with 13/18 resulting in 6 points(72%). Those numbers will win you alot of football games.

Denver Broncos 39 - San Diego Chargers 38 - Making The Grade
One last look at the Chargers game before moving full throttle to Week 3's Home matchup with the Saints. We'll talk much more about that, but it is time for this week's edition of "Making The Grade" where I will grade the Broncos performance from the day before. The most important "grade" is the one on the scoreboard, and for the Broncos this week it was another W. What about the players performance? Let's take a look....

Jay Cutler -- 36/50 - 350 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT It was another monster performance for Cutler. He was on target all day long, and to throw 50 passes and complete 72% of them is simply amazing. I can't, however, give Cutler anything better than a B because of the Red Zone pick. That play could have easily cost the Broncos the game, had things turned out differently. These things are going to happen with a young quarterback, however, and it is his effort at making a play every time he takes a snap that enables him to make 25 good plays before he makes 1 bad one. The hope is he learns from it and doesn't repeat it. Cutler knows this, and I am confident that we won;t see many more plays like this going forward. As an offense, the Broncos are still rolling, and through two games the team has scored points on 13/19(68%) possessions, with 10/13(77%)scoring possessions resulting in touchdowns. |
