Jacksonville Jaguars @ Denver Broncos - A Primer

The Denver Broncos (4-1), who hold a two-game lead atop the AFC West, aim for their 400th overall victory on Sunday when they host the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3). Kickoff at INVESCO Field at Mile High is set for 2:05p.m. MDT, and the game will be broadcast on CBS with Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf calling the action.

Denver is coming off a 16-13 win at home against Tampa Bay last week. The Broncos posted three sacks against a Buccaneers squad that had not allowed a sack in its last two games while Denver kicker Matt Prater made all three field goal attempts, including a 55- yarder that marked his fourth 50+yard conversion this year.

The Broncos face a Jaguars team that lost 26-21 against Pittsburgh on Sunday night. All five of Jacksonville's games this season have been decided by seven points or fewer, and its defeat to the Steelers snapped the club's two-game winning streak.

Having won their last six home games in the regular season, the Broncos enter Sunday's game with the NFL's longest home winning streak. Quarterback Jay Cutler has sparked Denver's recent home success, throwing 15 touchdown passes and two interceptions in addition to completing 70 percent of his passes in that six-game period.

Named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, Cutler has directed a Broncos offense that ranks second in the NFL in both yards per game (415.0) and first downs (117) while placing third in the league in points per game (29.8). Brandon Marshall has been a key part of Denver's offensive success, leading all NFL wide receivers in receptions (34) and posting the second-best receiving yards per game average (105.8) in the league.

Denver's defense has helped the club build early leads with the Broncos one of just five teams in the NFL to not allow a touchdown in the first quarter.

Yahoo Buzz!, Facebook and Digg

As I'm sure many of y'all noticed this morning, all stories that have been marked for distribution now have Digg and Facebook share buttons in addition to Yahoo! Buzz. We've had some success with Yahoo! Buzz and we figured it was time to open this up on these large platforms as well.

The buttons are cool, but they don't click themselves. If you feel something is deserved, go ahead and click.  There is so much quality content on this site, and the others around SBNation, that I want your stuff to get out there in front of as many eyes as possible.

As always, thanks for MHR what it is!

A Few Questions With...TheSportsGuru, Broncos Blogger

Hello Jags fans, Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to Broncos/Jaguars week.  As part of the cross-blogging that will be going on all week between MHR and BCC, we figured we would create these FanPosts on each others sites to answer any questions that were out there about each team.

Got a Broncos question?  Fire away!  I am looking forward to a great game Sunday.  Broncos fans still have a rather bitter taste in our mouth about last year's game, so this weekend should be fun!  So good luck, and ask me any questions about the Broncos, the game, etc!

I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered!

40 Years Later - Marlin Briscoe anniversary receives little fan-fair

It was 40 years ago yesterday that Broncos QB Marlin Briscoe broke the huddle against the Cincinnati Bengals becoming the first black quarterback to start a National Football League game.  Not much in the way of fan-fair.  I mean, did anyone hear anything about it?  Perhaps it is because it happened in Denver.  If Briscoe had played for the New York Giants they probably would have thrown a ticker-tape parade.  Yes, the east-coast bias card gets played quite often by Broncos fans, and this could just be another example of "if it didn't happen here it isn't news".

Perhaps, on the flip-side, its a good thing that Briscoe's achievement isn't big news.  Perhaps it shows how far this country has come.  There are several black quarterbacks in the NFL now, and it's been 20 years since Doug Williams broke the hearts of Broncos fans in the Super Bowl.

Still, we celebrate Jackie Robinson and deservedly so.  Briscoe was the first black player to start at the most important position in all of sports.  It has to be worth something, right?

On how close RB Ryan Torain (elbow) is to returning from injury

"There is a chance that he could start practicing next week, according to doctors. I would say that the earliest he would be available would be after the bye week. That’s my guess."

Denver Broncos 16 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13 - Monday Presser

HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN

On the Broncos’ defense

“They played well. We did a lot of good things on defense. Any time you have six series with three plays and out, it is a good start. I was pleased with their effort throughout the game. We are starting to build and starting to make some strides forward. Hopefully, we can keep it going.”

On the defenses having more enthusiasm against Tampa Bay compared to previous weeks

“I wouldn’t go through that. I think people have a short memory sometimes. We played three quarters against the Raiders that we allowed 128 yards in total offense, 27 zip. They are a pretty good rushing football team. We did some good things against San Diego. We have had some opportunities where we have played a good three quarters or a good quarter, but in this game we played a good four quarters.”

On how WR Brandon Marshall is handling being double covered

“That is football in the National Football League. You have to understand what it takes to win and the quarterback, I thought, managed the game very well. In that situation, most people don’t look at the fact that we had three third-and-2’s, two third-and-3’s and a third-and-4 that we missed. We were 6-of-14. The ones we missed were ones that keep drives going. Instead of having 16 points, you end up having 30 points. We have been much better in our third down area. When you miss three those and you are still 6-of-14 against an excellent defense, you are doing some good things. We just have to work on that third down area to keep the ball and get some more plays. We completed 68 percent of our passes for 227 yards and that is good. You can’t turn the football over and you can’t get second and long and third and long, and for the most part we didn’t. That is what you have to do to win the football game. Especially some of the young guys, they want to contribute but they don’t understand what it takes to win sometimes. You have to make those third downs.”

On the contributions of DT Dewayne Robertson

“He is doing what we ask him to do. It is always a change going from a 3-4 to a four-man front. You have to be pretty unselfish in the four-man front because a lot of times the linebackers are going to get the tackles. I think it was obvious after you saw the stats following the game that the defensive line did a good job occupying the offensive lineman and giving the linebackers an opportunity to make some plays.”

Broncos Sign Chad Mustard, Release Dylan Gandy

The Denver Broncos on Monday signed free-agent tight end Chad Mustard, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Broncos also on Monday waived guard Dylan Gandy.

Mustard (6-foot-6, 277 pounds) is in his fifth NFL season and third year with the Broncos. He competed with Denver in its 2008 training camp before he was waived on Aug. 30.

In 41 career games (6 starts) with Denver (2006-07) and Cleveland (2002-04), Mustard has totaled 12 receptions for 123 yards (10.3 avg.). He entered the NFL with the Browns as a practice-squad signee in 2002 after a stint with the Omaha Beef of the National Indoor Football League, and he played both football and basketball at the University of North Dakota.

Last season with the Broncos, Mustard saw time in 12 games (2 starts) and had a personal-best five receptions for 62 yards (12.4 avg.). He started a career-high four games and appeared in a total of 12 contests for Denver in 2006.

Mustard played two seasons of football at North Dakota after his basketball eligibility expired. He finished his collegiate basketball career ranked eighth all-time in UND annals with 1,568 points scored.

Born on Oct. 8, 1977, Mustard attended Scotus Central Catholic High School in Columbus, Neb.
